MITTA MITTA BREWING CO

Nestled in the Mitta Valley in Victoria’s High Country, sits Mitta Mitta Brewing Co. Owned by best friends Tim Cabelka and Alec Pennington and their respective partners Jen and Chris.

 

A MOVE TO THE COUNTRY

The brewery dream started with a phone call 8 years ago between Tim and Alec. At the time Tim was working at Red Hill Brewery on the Mornington Peninsula and Alec had recently moved back to the country. Tim was ready to make it on his own and Alec had the land to accommodate a brewery. Not long after, Alec lured Tim, Jen and their family from Melbourne to Mitta with the prospect of country life and building something to call their own.

Mitta Mitta Brewing Co finally opened in 2018, after years of hard work and a successful crowdfunding campaign. The incredible brewery was built entirely by the two couples (and a little help from the local community), with locally sourced materials. This is evident throughout the whole building, from the chairs and tables to the bar top, wood beams and the building’s wooden exterior. Tim’s also built his brew kit by hand.

 

CZECH INFLUENCE

Tim started home brewing in his early 20’s when living in a share house in Melbourne, and his housemates loved his beer so much he became the resident brewer.

The son of Czech parents, the influence of his heritage and Cezch beer styles comes through in his beers. Mitta Brewing currently has 3 core range beers on tap and release a few seasonals each year. The core range is made up of an easy-drinking Pale Lager, a light bodied, roasty Schwarbier and a mid strength English Bitter. The later has been hit with the locals, and one Tim brewed intentionally due to the breweries out of town location. At only 3.5%, locals can pop in for a beer before they head home for the night.

Another factor which makes Mitta Brewing incredibly unique in the High Country is the on site, homegrown hops which are used in all of their beers. Every year Tim grows 3 different varieties of hops without the use of chemicals, making the brewery even more self sufficient. The majority of the malt (single origin and small batch) that is used in all of the beers come from Voyager Craft Malt just across the border in New South Wales. All of these elements make for some truly delicious beer.

 

LOCALLY SOURCED FOOD

Last but not least is the food offering, and this is where Alec and partner Chris come into play. For a small venue, the menu is jam packed with an abundance of different dishes. Including woodfired pizza, homemade gyoza, grazing platters and lots of freshly baked sweet treats. The food is either grown on the property or sourced from local farmers and butchers. Again, staying true to their values of creating a self sufficient business.
