Founders Ben and Maria Kraus began small-batch brewing out of Ben’s Dad’s shed back in 2005. Since then, Bridge Road Brewers has been leading the Australia craft beer scene, with innovation and world-class beers made from top quality ingredients.

Ben realised his passion for beer on a trip to Europe in 2000. The purpose of the trip originally was to learn more about wine. However, he accidentally stumbled upon his love for beer whilst working in a brewery in Innsbruck, Austria.

The brewery is located in what used to be an old coach house, tucked behind the main street in Beechworth, down a small laneway. It’s like a hidden gem! With 20 beers on tap at any one time, the fantastic bar staff can find the right beer for you. Relax in the beer garden in summer and keep warm by the log-burning fire in winter.

The High Country’s fine local produce is always utilised in the beers, such as fruit from Mountain Yuzu, bread from the Beechworth Bakery and locally sourced wine barrels to age their beers. The brewery releases up to 60 unique products in a 12 month period, which is outstanding considering their size. Many of these beers are small-batch, experimental beers and collaborations with other brewers and winemakers from Australia and beyond.

No beer sets the standard higher though than their flagship beer, Beechworth Pale Ale. Voted Victoria’s best beer in 2018 and 2019, this beer is tweaked each season to continually refine the brew. In 2019 the brewery hit a huge landmark: their 2000th beer brewed!

The brewery is always pushing the boundaries in the craft beer world and in May 2019, Bridge Road Brewers became the worlds first beer micro-nation. The 2000 square meter sovereign nation of the venue is now officially called ‘Brewland.’ Ben and the team are driven to promote the importance of keeping beer local and independent. Staying true to their values from the very beginning, you can always see their commitment to remain independent and support and work with local businesses.

The food at the brewery is a gift from Maria. Maria originates from Austria in the Tyrolean Alps, less than 100kms in either direction of Northern Italy and Germany.

When starting the brewery, Maria wanted to create food inspired by home. To this day, you will still smell homemade pretzels and an array of pizzas when entering the venue. The Australian twist? The food is rich in locally sourced produce from across the High Country region.
